Bone Remodelling Through Time Research Group - University of Queensland
We ask to what extent evolution and social structures explain biological bone loss mechanisms.
This interdisciplinary 4-year project combines bone chemical and histological data and contextualises them socially and temporally to generate the first comprehensive understanding of cell mechanisms responsible for bone destruction and deposition known as bone remodelling.
This research is undertaken through three piplines:

• Histology - We examine bone remodelling parameters in femur histology sections from historical and modern populations in England and Australia to determine rates of bone resorption.
• Chemistry - We examine thin femur slices for mineral and organic content at the microscopic level to determine how its composition varies with variation in remodelling and other histology parameters.
• Past & Present - We examine bone histology and chemistry change over the last millennium and within and between different social and economic structures to test the extent to which modern bone might reflect bone loss patterns in the past.

​Waipapa Taumata Rau – University of Auckland 
​At Waipapa Taumata Rau – University of Auckland, Biological Anthropology is a subdiscipline of Anthropology, in the Faculty of Arts and Education. We are the only four-field Anthropology department in New Zealand.

Our current Biological Anthropology staff research spans bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, medical anthropology, historical epidemiology, primatology and ethnoprimatology.

With new, purpose-built laboratories close to the centre of Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), our research incorporates molecular approaches including proteomics, ancient DNA, stable isotope and hormone analyses.​

Australian and New Zealand Funding and Scholarship Opportunities

University of Auckland - Funding for International Students
UoA has a number of different scholarships open to International students for Honours, PG dip, and Masters  degrees. 
These include:

• The University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship offers up to $10,000 towards compulsory tuition fees for new International undergraduate and postgraduate students. Applicable study: New international students enrolling in undergraduate degrees, PGDip or masters programmes.
• The Kupe Leadership Scholarship (up to NZ$25,000): Applicable to Full-time study in a bachelors (honours) degree, postgraduate diploma or masters degree. Several of our Anthropology students have held Kupe scholarships.
• For those with Indian citizenship there is an India High Achievers Scholarship. Applicable study: New International students from India enrolling in undergraduate degrees, PGDip or masters programmes

For PhD studies, the main funding is through the UoA Doctoral Scholarships, and scholarship consideration is part of the PhD application package. University of Auckland - Summer Research Scholarships
UoA offers Summer Research Scholarship opportunities for high-achieving domestic and international students who will have completed at least two years of equivalent full-time study in an undergraduate degree. These 10-week supervised research projects include a stipend and allow students to gain valuable research experience, work with leading researchers at the University of Auckland, enhance your career opportunities and help students think about pursuing postgraduate study. Projects vary from year to year. Applications typically open in July - for more information see our website.
